Pros & Cons Of Fibreglass & Concrete

So, you’ve decided you’re ready to invest in a pool. The next step is figuring out what type of pool best suits your lifestyle, budget and tastes. As they are the two most popular styles of pool, below is a run through of the pros and cons of both fibreglass and concrete pools

Fibreglass Pros

Arguably the best thing about a fibreglass pool is that they are easy and quick to install, generally only taking a week or two. The gelcoat surface is not only visually appealing, it’s also simple to look after and makes it easier to control algae and bacteria growth as there are no nooks or crannys for it to breed in. If properly maintained, a fibreglass pool should also never have to be resurfaced in its lifetime. Because of the many engineering advancements, fibreglass has become a highly durable material and will not crack in unstable soil. Fibreglass is also noted to build up and retain heat much better than a concrete pool

SUMMARY

Quick to install – standard installation is a week or two

Visually appealing surface

Easy to look after – Gelcoat surface makes it easier to control algae and bacteria growth

Require very little ongoing care – should not need to be resurfaced in their lifetime

Retain heat better and heat up faster

Very durable building material – won’t crack in unstable soil

Fibreglass Cons

Really the only negative for a fibreglass pool is that you are severely limited when it comes to shape and size options. So, if you are someone who wants a fully customised feature pool, concrete might be the best option for you.

SUMMARY

Shape and size limitations

Concrete Pros

Obviously, the best thing about a concrete pool is the flexibility with design. If you have an eye for outdoor design, a concrete pool can be a stunning addition to your backyard.

SUMMARY

Flexibility with design – can customise

Very attractive aesthetically

Concrete Cons

A concrete pool will take significantly longer to build and install than a fibreglass pool, sometimes several months of on-site work is required, and because of customisation options it can become very expensive. Concrete is a more porous material than fibreglass, giving algae and bacteria room to breed as well as being more susceptible to black algae. Because of its rough texture, it can cause scrapes and grazes and if the pool has not been maintained properly, the open wound could lead to a nasty infection. Concrete is also far more likely to crack and leak because of soil problems and requires much costlier ongoing maintenance with the pool needing to be reconditioned every 15 years or so. Most concrete pool owners also note that it takes a long time to build up heat and does not retain it for long.

SUMMARY

Take much longer to build – several months of on-site work

Because of customisation options, can become very expensive

Rough under foot, can cause scrapes and grazes

Cost more to run – are more porous therefore giving algae and bacteria room to breed

More susceptible to black algae

Require costly ongoing maintenance – need to be reconditioned after fifteen years or so

Cracks and leaks because of soil problems

Colder than fibreglass

Now you have all the knowledge you need to decide which type of pool is right for you. Cozy’s Pool & Spa Care have years of experience cleaning and maintaining both concrete and fibreglass pools, so we can keep your pool spick and span all year round – reducing the chance of any large repair bills.

What To Consider Before Investing In A Pool

When it comes to a swimming pool, you can really only go one of two ways; you consider them a sound investment or you consider them a money funnel. A swimming pool can be a worthy investment, particularly if you are thinking about selling your home in the future but it is also important to fully understand the costs that come with a pool and assess whether a pool is financially right for you. In this article, we will discuss details of these costs and tips on how to keep them down.

Installation

The three most common types of pool are fibreglass, concrete and vinyl liner. A fibreglass pool can set you back anywhere between $25000 to $50000 with an in-ground vinyl liner pool costing about the same. An above ground vinyl liner pool is by far the cheapest of the bunch, costing approximately $10000 although they require greater ongoing maintenance and care. A concrete pool is the most expensive option because of its versatility. There are however factors that should be taken into consideration when budgeting for a pool installation, such as ease of access, the slope of your yard and ground conditions, the size, shape and quality of the pool and any additional features (fencing, slides, diving boards, etc.).

Maintenance Equipment

Below is a list of essential equipment you will need to keep your pool clean and hygienic and price ranges you can expect:

Skimmer net – $7 to $53

Chlorine – $10 to $330

Hydrochloric Acid – $22 – $140

PH Increaser – $5 – $65

PH Testing Kit – $9 – $2000

Vacuum – $185 – $3300

Filters – $8 – $1200

Pool Cover – $8 to $355

Accessories & Features

The two most popular pool features are diving boards and slides, but for a high quality, reliable product you can expect to be paying quite a bit. Diving boards range from $1000 to $4000 and a pool slide is a sting at $1500 to $10000 depending on size, aesthetic and customisation.

Pool Repairs

The key to ensuring that the intricate inner workings of your pool’s systems don’t fail is thorough, regular maintenance, but sometimes things just go wrong. Unfortunately, pool system repairs often require a professional and can end up emptying your wallet.

PUMP MOTOR: When your pump motor fails, the water won’t circulate, heat or filter, so you should make sure you check it regularly. The cost to repair a pump motor depends on what part has failed but you could be forking out up to $4000 to replace it if the damage can’t be fixed.

POOL FILTER: If you properly maintain your pool filters, you won’t have to worry about replacing cartridges and should only need to clean the once every three to five weeks. A pool filter can cost up to $1245 to replace.

LEAKS: A leak in a vinyl lined pool can be patched up DIY style or professionally and a fibreglass pool should be fixed by a professional. A leak in a concrete pool is an expensive issue, you’ll need to call out a professional to drain, sand and repair the pool properly.

HEATERS: Debris blockages and insects are often the cause of damage to the small parts of your pool’s heating system. It is highly recommended that you hire a professional and do not attempt to fix it yourself as a heating system can cost up to $10000 to replace.

Running Costs

A swimming pool typically uses 2000kWh – 3000kWh per year depending on the size of the pump, how long the pump is running for and if the pool is heated. This is an average of $800 to $1200 per year added to your electricity bill. The average pool pump costs 22.5 – 45 cents per hour to run, and a salt chlorinator costs 3.6 – 6 cents per hour to run.

Money Saving Tactics

Invest in a pool blanket to stop debris cluttering your pool and to warm the water naturally. An electric robotic pool cleaner is also a good way to go as they operate independently of the pool’s filtration and most will automatically turn off after a three-hour cleaning cycle. You can also switch to an ECO pump, costing a mere $80 a year with a 12-hour run time compared to a 1.5HP regular pump at $1000 a year with an 8-hour run time (saving you up to 60%).

Read through all this and think you’re ready for a pool? Great! Just remember you can always save yourself the time and hassle of maintaining your pool by calling in the experts at Cozy’s Pool & Spa. We can provide regular or casual services and you can have the peace of mind knowing that no hefty repair bills are coming your way because your pool is being maintained by experienced professionals.

YOUR NERANG POOL CLEANING TEAM

Here at Cozy Pool Care we have a full time pool cleaner pool cleaning Nerang and the surrounding areas. As Nernag and its surrounding suburbs pools are so diverse, our pool cleaners understand that not every pool is the same. They understand the need to adjust their approach to maintaining each pool based on the surrounding environment and its influence to the chemical balance.

How is it that a pool can vary so much in Nerang? Some pools are on acreage surrounded by vast array of trees causing many leaves to drop into the pool. This can cause algae to build up quite quickly, therefore the need for more regular servicing is paramount. We first remove all of the leaves, which depending on the amount of tress you have can take some time. We then scrub the walls, vacuum the pool, backwash the filtration equipment and balance the chemicals.

On the other hand Nerang is also home to small residential pools. Some of which do not have many trees causing leaves to go into the pool. Instead some pools are open and prone to evaporation, which in turn can cause a decline in the chemical balance. Our Nerang pool cleaning experts will regularly maintain your pool to ensure hat the evaporation of water does not cause your chemicals to decrease and cause a green pool.

Why choose Cozy Pool & Spa Care Nerang?

Cozy Pool and Spa Care have been servicing the Nerang area for 8 years and we love it! Residents have commented on our reliability and honesty in servicing their pools, with the customer at the forefront always. Our Nerang pool cleaners will commit to ensuring you pool is in pristine condition. Check out our regular pool cleaning Nerang service option that most of our customers opt for. Contact our team today for an obligation free quote and we promise we will not dissapoint you.

KEEP YOUR POOL WARM THIS WINTER

As the days get colder, most pool owners begin the process of packing up their pool for the winter. Well, now you can enjoy your pool all year round with heating options available to suit all needs and budgets. Why settle for covering up your pool this winter when you can have lovely warm water to settle into on the chilly days to come. Here we’ll provide some details on the pros and cons of the four pool heating system types: solar, gas, electric heat pump and electric element.

Solar Pool Heating

PROS: Solar pool heating has one obvious advantage in that it utilises energy from the sun at no cost to you. This system is fantastic for recreational pools used mostly in the warmer months and sparingly in Autumn and Winter. Your only costs for solar panel heating are initial installation and the recommended booster pump.

CONS: This system relies solely on weather conditions and operates at peak performance on cloud-free Summer days, meaning it is not as effective in the cooler months. You’ll need to consider the position of your roof and pool for maximum efficiency, as well as any large trees that could block the panels. How much your pool is affected by shade and wind should also be considered.

Electric Element

PROS: An electric element is typically cheap to buy and easy to install. This system is ideal for pools that can’t meet the requirements of gas and heat pump heating.

CONS: Although electric elements are the least costly out of the bunch, you will need to moderate use to save yourself money in ongoing costs. You may also find that your electric element system will have trouble drumming up enough power to heat a freezing cold pool in Winter, with there being more cold water than the heater can handle.

Electric Heat Pump

PROS: The electric heat pump is perfect for keeping your pool warm all year round. Because these systems work by taking the heat out of the air and transferring it to the pool, an electric heat pump operates best in warm temperatures, however, are capable of maintaining comfortable pool temperatures in the cooler months. The electric heat pump is also the lowest cost option for year-round heating.

CONS: Electric heat pumps generally don’t last as long as other heating options.

Gas Heating

PROS: Gas heaters are by far the best option in regards to their rapid heating ability and flexibility. This system can easily maintain desired temperatures, being capable of a 14oC rise in as little as 24 hours. Although gas heater costs are relatively low, it’s ideal as an add-on to a solar heating system in bad weather and at night.

CONS: The installation and purchase of a gas heater can be more expensive than other pool heating options. Repairing a gas heater can also be incredibly expensive and it is not recommended that you attempt repairs yourself.

As you can see, there are many options available for keeping your pool warm and cozy in the cooler months to come. If you are unsure what system is right for your pool and your needs, don’t hesitate to contact the friendly team at Cozy Pool & Spa. Our specialists can also repair and install pool heating systems on the Gold Coast – just call 07 5631 9810.

Stay Safe In Your Spa

A hot tub or spa is a great way to destress and ease those aches and pains. With cooler weather on our doorstep, a spa is also used as an alternative to some for pool heating systems. However, without proper maintenance by an experienced Cozy Pool & Spa professional, your ideal method of relaxation can pose serious risks to your health. So before you invest in a spa or next sit back in one, read below for warning signs you should watch out for.

Heat Stress

Everybody reacts differently to prolonged exposure to heat or steam. You should always check the temperature before entering the spa and never get in if the water is 40oC or more. If you start to feel dizzy or lightheaded, exit the spa immediately to avoid injury. Children, pregnant women and intoxicated people should avoid spas or limit their exposure to only a few minutes.

Bacteria

While they may be a great way to wind down after a long day, spas and hot tubs are well known to be breeding grounds for a wide range of bacteria. The most common bacterial problem you’ll encounter in a spa is pseudomonas folliculitis. This is a skin infection that produces itchy red bumps and although resistant to most antibiotics, usually clears up on its own within 10 days.

A much rarer occurrence (although it does happen) is the transmission of toxic shock syndrome, which can enter the spa is someone carrying the infection gets in before you with a cut or scrape.

Most bacteria will reside in the spa’s pipes, so when the jets turn on they are thrusted into the air, which can lead to you breathing in anything from a cough to Legionnaires’ disease.

The rim of a hot tub or spa is also perfect for viruses like herpes that love warm and damp conditions. If someone with herpes sits on the rim of a spa and you take their place, you can contract the disease even through a bathing suit.

The Dos & Don’ts of Hot Tubs

So, with all the bacteria present in spas and hot tubs, how do you stop yourself from becoming infected? We recommend that you steer clear of all public spas and hot tubs, as you can never be sure just how well they are maintained. In a friend’s hot tub? Don’t enter the water with any cuts or scrapes, don’t dunk your head underwater and don’t engage in any sexual activity while in the hot tub, all these things will skyrocket your chances of becoming infected with a nasty disease.

However, if you’ve invested in your own hot tub or spa, you can relax away knowing you’ve kept it spick and span by calling Cozy’s Pool & Spa for regular cleaning and maintenance. Our team of cleaners are highly skilled and experienced when it comes to ensuring that your spa or hot tub is hygienic and safe.

You’ve spent a lot of money either buying a home with, or installing, your dream feature – a pool. They key to managing the on-going cost of maintaining a pool, and continuing to enjoy your pool with the minimum amount of effort, is to ensure that you do not neglect your pool once the warm weather is over.
By following our tips, we hope you find that once the winter hibernation period is over, it is not long before you are back to enjoying your pool, with the minimum amount of fuss.

Step 1: Clean Your Pool

Not only does the end of the warm weather present the ideal time for a spring clean of your pool, it will assist in limiting the likelihood that you will be faced with a green pool due to algae or bacteria that is harmful to your health.
Do not simply rely on your pool’s vacuum, although it remains a valuable part of the cleaning process. Clean the pool in its entirety, including scrubbing all surfaces, tiles, grout and cleaning additional equipment, including the filters, skimmer and pump.
Ensure that you remove leaves, sticks and other debris.

Step 2: Check The Water Balance

The chlorine level of your pool will depend on the type of pool you have. If you are unsure, take a sample of pool water and the details of your pool type to your nearest pool specialist for advice and assistance to find the correct pool chemicals. You also need to check that the pH level of your pool is at the correct level of alkalinity.
It is possible that it is recommended that you “shock” your pool. This means using higher than normal levels of chlorine or other non-chlorine chemicals for a short period of time to kill algae, “combined chlorine” and/ or bacteria, if significant levels of organic growth are detected.

Step 3: Cover Your Pool

There are a number of reasons why you should cover your pool as the weather cools. First, it can keep your pool’s temperature a little higher, allowing you to make use of the pool during the cooler months, without relying on other methods of heating. The use of a cover will also reduce debris falling into your pool, which tends to increase in autumn and winter due to the increased falling of leaves and flying debris due to strong winds.
It is recommended that, from time to time, you remove the pool cover during winter to reduce the likelihood of algal blooms, which may increase the need for chemical treatment and cleaning of your pool.

Step 4: Reset Your Pool Pump and Filter

Whether or not you choose to make use of your pool during winter, you should still run your pool pump daily to circulate pool water both as part of the chemical maintenance schedule and to make it more difficult for organisms to grow in your pool. Likewise, the filter also assists in ensuring that organisms find it more difficult to take hold, and should operate daily. A filter backwash should be performed every month to ensure it operating efficiently. The recommended time frame for running a pool filter during the winter maintenance period varies from as little as three, to as much as six hours per day. It is recommended that you speak with your local specialist to determine the most effective length based on your pool.

Step 5: Continue Regular Maintenance

Continue to check your pool regularly – at least fortnightly. Ensure that the water balance is correct, that unusually warm weather hasn’t significantly evaporated water levels, and that there is no debris in the pool. Regular running of the pool’s filtration system, along with proper pool care, should reduce the risk of significant malfunction, but nevertheless, you should ensure pool equipment is checked for signs of decreased functionality.

Consistent maintenance of your pool is the secret to a quick and enjoyable return to its pristine waters when warmer weather finally rolls around.

CLEANING YOUR SWIMMING POOL AFTER A FLOOD OR STORM

In the wake of cyclone Debbie, many South-East Queensland home owners have found themselves with a rather large mess to clean up. If you have a pool on your property, this process could be a lengthy one as there are many factors that need to be taken into consideration when ensuring that your pool is safe to swim in after a storm or flood. We highly recommend contacting our expert pool cleaners at Cozy Pool and Spa so that you can rest assured knowing your pool is being taken care of by professionals and so that you can focus on cleaning up your home. While you wait for Cozy Pool and Spa to arrive, here are our top tips for removing any immediate dangers to you and your family from your pool:

CHECK FOR DAMAGES

Once floodwaters or dangerous weather have receded, perform a thorough assessment of your pool and the surrounding area. Check for broken fences, furniture, pavers and hazardous debris.

WILDLIFE

Humans aren’t the only species that need to take refuge in wild weather. Make sure you inspect every nook and cranny for snakes, spiders and any other possibly dangerous animals. Should you find any, please do not attempt to handle, harm or kill them in any way, call your local wildlife handler.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY

It’s common knowledge that electricity and water are not a good combination, so always make sure that you contact a licensed electrician to inspect your pool’s electrical equipment after flooding or severe storms.

CONSTRUCTION

After seeing the muddy water left behind by a flood or storm, it can be tempting to simply empty out your pool and refill it. We strongly advise against this as it may cause your pool to pop out, particularly if you own a fibreglass pool.

If your pool has been damaged by flooding or severe weather, make sure you call the pool experts at Cozy Pool and Space. Our professional team will ensure that your pool is back to being safe, clean and fun in no time!

Swimming Pool Safety

Pools can be a great way to kick back and relax with friends and family, however without regular maintenance and supervision of those in the pool, your beloved backyard feature could become an extremely hazardous area. At Cozy’s Pool and Spa Care, part of our job is keeping your pool hygienic and safe, so here are our top five tips for ensuring that your pool stays safe all year round.

Gates & Fences

As part of Queensland pool safety legislation, all pool gates must open outward from the pool, be self-closing and self-latching and be at least 1.2m high with the latch more than 1.5m off the ground. Fences should be no more than 100mm from the ground and any vertical gaps cannot be more than 100mm apart. Any objects near the pool fence that can be used to climb over it should be removed and stored out of view of young children.

Supervision

While children are at the highest risk of death or serious injury because of pool related accidents, you should regularly check on everyone in and around your pool, with constant supervision of any children (children under the age of 5 should be within arm distance at all times). Always ensure that an adult is present and never leave an older child responsible for a younger one.

First Aid

As a pool owner, it is essential to undergo basic first aid training so that you know exactly what to do in case of an emergency, for example, someone slips and hits their head on the edge of the pool or needs to be resuscitated.

Swimming Lessons

Enrolling your child in swimming lessons is one of the most effective ways of ensuring their safety in the water, however, you should always maintain constant supervision both in and around the pool.

Pool Maintenance

When not properly taken care of, your pool can quickly become home to parasites, which can cause gastrointestinal, skin, ear and eye infections among others. The most common RWI (recreational water illness) is diarrhea, caused by parasitic micro-organisms like cryptosporidiosis (crypto) and giardiasis. Ensuring that you call a professional to regularly test and clean your pool is the most effective method for reducing the risk of these parasites infecting your pool. Another reliable prevention method is to always follow good hygiene when in a pool.

Cozy’s Pool and Spa Care can provide regular pool maintenance services all year round, including testing and analysing the water, checking the cleaner as well as cleaning the filter, pump and chlorinator. Scheduling maintenance for your pool on a regular basis helps ensure that it is safe for your friends and family, so get in touch today.
